Chrystia Freeland is a Canadian journalist, politician, and author. She was born on August 2, 1968 in Peace River, Alberta and raised in a Ukrainian-Canadian community. From a young age, Freeland showed an interest in politics and economics, often debating with her family members about global issues.
After graduating from Harvard with a degree in history and literature, Freeland began her journalism career with the Financial Times in London. She quickly rose through the ranks and became the managing editor at the age of 29, making her the youngest person to hold that position in the newspaper’s history. She then went on to become the deputy editor of The Globe and Mail before moving to New York to work for the Thomson Reuters news agency.
However, it was in 2013 when Freeland’s career took a major turn as she entered the world of politics. She was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party of Canada and held various positions, including Minister of International Trade and Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2019, she became the first woman to serve as Minister of Finance in Canada, making her a trailblazer in the country’s political landscape. With her journalism background and expertise in economics, Freeland has become a powerful force in shaping Canadian policies and advocating for progressive ideas.
