Jagmeet Singh is a Canadian politician and lawyer who has recently risen to prominence as the leader of the New Democratic Party, the third largest party in the Canadian Parliament. He was born in Scarborough, Ontario, to Punjabi immigrant parents and was raised in Windsor, Ontario. Singh’s parents were active in their community, instilling a strong sense of social justice and activism in him from a young age. He attended York University and then went on to earn a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, solidifying his passion for fighting for justice and equality through the legal system.
After working as a criminal defense lawyer, Singh turned his focus towards politics and was elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) to represent Bramalea-Gore-Malton in 2011. He quickly gained a reputation for his charisma, passion, and dedication to social justice issues. In 2017, Singh became the leader of the New Democratic Party, making history as the first person of a visible minority group to lead a major federal political party in Canada. He has been a strong advocate for progressive policies, such as universal pharmacare and a wealth tax to fund social programs.
